The Minnesota Timberwolves are entering another rebuild year under Rick Adelman with a very young team. The most veteran player in the roster is the former Houston Rockets player Kevin Martin, who figures to be the starting guard next to Spanish magician Ricky Rubio. Kevin Love, Derrick Williams and Nikola Pekovic are the other probable starters for the Wolves.
The key for this season, however, is what Ricky Rubio will be able to do.
The former Barcelona star will enter his third year in the league and this season has been defined as a make-or-break campaign according to several experts. His passing and defensive numbers have been above average ever since his arrival to the league but Ricky Rubio definitively needs to improve his offensive performance if the Timberwolves want to have any chance of making the playoffs this season.
The first priority for the Spaniard is to develop a consistent jumper. Despite averaging a little bit more than 10 points each year, he has never shot more than 36 percent from the field. His percentages from beyond the arc are even worse: 34 percent in his rookie year and only 29 percent last season.
Another thing Ricky needs to be able to do is to stay healthy through the schedule. He played only 41 games in his rookie season and last year he was able to participate in only 57. If he’s not fit enough to play, he won’t be able to direct the team’s offense effectively.
Overall, Rubio needs to be an offensive force for Minnesota this season as this team will need another weapon next to Martin and Love, who will gather most of the attention on the offensive side of the ball. It’s the only way they will have a chance to reach the playoffs once the regular season is over.
