Orlando Magic: Exercising Options on Nikola Vucevic and Tobias Harris Is a Huge Win

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Orlando Magic made an excellent move this week in regards to shaping their roster at least for another year. The Magic decided to exercise the options on the contracts of center Nikola Vucevic and forward Tobias Harris, keeping them in Orlando through the 2014-2015 season.

By doing this, the Magic have made it clear that they want to seriously consider keeping these two aboard for the long term. Last season, Orlando acquired Harris from the Milwaukee Bucks in what turned out to be a fantastic deal for them when looking ahead. All Harris did last year in 27 games — 20 starts — was average 17.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 blocks and .9 steals per game while playing 36 minutes per game.

What a change of pace for Harris who was used to playing less than a third of the minutes in Milwaukee. Harris looks like the real deal, and at only 21, he could shock the NBA this year with proving just how good he is.

Vucevic, on the other hand, was one of the guy scooped up in the 3-player deal sending Dwight Howard out of town. With the Magic in 2012, he averaged 13.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 block per game. Vucevic was one of the constants for Orlando last season, always being trusted to get his double-double nearly every night.

Beyond this season, the Magic also have a guy like Victor Oladipo as one of the bigger cornerstones of a young core that could develop into a fun team to watch in the future. With Harris and Vucevic locked down for another season, the Magic clearly want to establish some chemistry on a young, but hopeful, team in rebuilding mode.
