Daniel Orton’s Early Exit Hurt The Philadelphia 76ers
Daniel Orton has been an important part of the Philadelphia 76ers this year. The Sixers could have used his help last night against the Washington Wizards when he left the game because of knee soreness.
Orton managed to score five points in seven minutes. He practically scored a point per minute and shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
The Wizards took revenge for last Friday’s loss by beating the Sixers convincingly in Philadelphia 116-102. The Sixers were missing an inside presence, and they allowed the Wizards to score easy outside baskets as a result. With Orton, his big build would have spread the Sixers out on the offensive end so they can get better outside looks.
Putting Orton in the middle would also allow the guards and forwards to defend the perimeter rather than allow point guard John Wall to get open looks. Wall shot 5-for-8 on three-pointers.
Orton’s size has benefited the Sixers. He grabbed three rebounds last night and is averaging 2.8 rebounds and a block per game. He’s played well in both games against the Wizards and managed to pull down six rebounds in the loss to the Golden State Warriors.
The 6-foot-10, 275-pound center uses his size to grab the ball but can be just as useful on the offensive end. Coach Brett Brown should have much of the offense revolve around Orton whenever opponents are giving the Sixers’ shooters trouble.
Without Orton, the Sixers have Spencer Hawes as their only available center. Power forwards Lavoy Allen, Thaddeus Young, Hollis Thompson and seldom-used Brandon Davies will be sharing time in the middle.
The Sixers will have to limit the playing time of every big man considering they are slim on the front-court. Orton is day-to-day so he may play limited minutes against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.
