Philadelphia 76ers Rookie Michael Carter-Williams Starting to Cool After Blazing Start
Like they didn’t have any clue that they were supposed to be a historically terrible team in the 2013-14 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers started off this season with three straight victories. Though the entire team was playing with a ton of energy, the biggest catalyst to their hot start was undoubtedly rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams.
Carter-Williams made his presence known in the NBA on the Sixers’ opening night as they knocked off the Miami Heat, putting up historical numbers and a near quadruple-double as he finished the night with 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals and seven rebounds while shooting 6-10 from the floor and 4-5 from three.
MCW continued his success over the Sixers’ next two wins, continuing to silence a lot of his critics as well. One of the biggest knocks on Carter-Williams as he came into the draft was his lack of ability as a scorer and how that would affect him. However, as he shot 22-47 from the field and 8-17 from three to start his career, those doubts seemed silly.
However, Philly has dropped their last two games, including a 116-102 loss to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night. Like how Carter-Williams was hot when the Sixers were hot, he’s been relatively cold in their two losses.
Over these past two games and subsequent losses, Carter-Williams has averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds and one steal per game. Though those stats aren’t bad, his efficiency numbers have nose-dived with him shooting only 12-38 from the field and 2-11 from three over the past two games.
There’s no question that Carter-Williams is going to have a much more productive rookie season than many people expected. However, it’s also expected for him to have struggles like he has in Philadelphia’s past two games. He is, after all, a young rookie that is adjusting to the NBA game, which has expected growing pains that come with it. In the end, though, you have to consider the Sixers’ point guard one of the favorites for the Rookie of the Year award going forward.
