One of coach Maurice Cheek‘s biggest objectives with the Pistons is showing them how to win against the best in the NBA.
Losing back-to-back to the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder at home isn’t exactly the way to go about bringing the Pistons back to title contention, at least not this season. Maybe it will eventually come. Once they can figure out how to beat the best of the league at The Palace, they can eventually beat the best on the road.
It’s the only way to go in the NBA if you’re to eventually be a title contender. The Thunder went to the free-throw line 17 more times than the Pistons, who outscored Oklahoma City by nine points from the floor. Getting to the free-throw line late in the game, plus hitting the foul shots will win any team a lot of games.
It’s not enough for the Pistons to show they can hang around a good team. They need to show they can beat the best whether it be at home or on the road. They’re always showing that they’re very vulnerable in certain parts of their game.
The Pistons are getting outplayed by the best teams in the NBA. It’s still a long season. Cheeks has to figure out which players he can count on to win basketball games for him. He needs more players to start stepping up in a major way.
