During the offseason, the Dallas Mavericks made sure they added some more scoring options to help Dirk Nowitzki. That help came in the form of shooting guard Monta Ellis. Not only did they sign Ellis, but they also added Sam Dalembert to play center for the team. Both players came over from the Milwuakee Bucks, where they played last season.
Both Ellis and Dalembert statistically are having better seasons than they did last year for the Bucks. Dalembert is averaging .6 points a game more for the Mavs and he’s also grabbing one more rebound per game for Dallas. Ellis is averaging 3.6 points more a game.
Both of these players have been crucial for the Mavericks at the beginning of the season. Dallas has relied on Ellis to carry them in scoring as opposed to Dirk early in the year. Ellis’ ability to drive and pass has also opened up the floor for Jose Calderon and other perimeter shooters.
Even though he faced a course of boos from the Milwaukee crowd on Saturday night, Ellis helped the Mavs win their first road game of the season. After losing their first three against the Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberworlves, the Mavericks were desperately needing a road victory. Ellis helped Dallas secure this has he had 18 points and five assists.
Although it’s the only time Dallas will visit the Bucks this year, it’s important to get this game over with for Ellis and Dalembert. It also showed the mental toughness of these players to get through the game and focus on getting the win. This will prove important as the Mavericks move through the season.
