Dallas Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis: Prime Partners in Court

Monta Ellis has not ceased to amaze Dirk Nowitzki.

Before the Dallas Mavericks‘ training camp and the NBA 2013 preseason opener, veteran power forward Nowitzki praised incoming shooting guard Ellis as “explosive” on Media Day. Then this Dynamic Duo took on their exhibitions together in supportive roles on the floor that led me to start calling them Nowellis.

Now this is one Mavs match made in “hardwood Heaven.” Instead of being prime “partners in crime,” we can say that Nowitzki and Ellis have established themselves as prime “partners in court” now that the 2013-14 season is in full swing. This Dallas dual indeed is a force to be reckoned with.

The one offense that I would like to see this pair commit along with the rest of the Mavs would be to steal the NBA Finals title from the Miami Heat, who they beat for the championship in 2011. Then for the past two years, Miami has earned the Larry O’Brien trophy for the East.

On Friday, Nov. 15, the Mavs face the Heat during their double-duty weekend in Florida. Following their visit to Miami, they will play the Orlando Magic, which I hope to see another dose of Mavs magic like they had against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

After that game, Nowitzki, who jumped into Jerry West‘s spot for No. 16 in NBA leading scorers of all-time, once again described Ellis’ skills as “explosive” in terms of his offense. “Monta Basketball” certainly was in the house that night.

I have called swingman Vince Carter, who is part of my Tipoff Trio that consists of Nowitzki and small forward Shawn Marion, a “facilitator.” This seasoned pro and hopeful Hall of Famer in turn has referred to Ellis as a player who makes the game “easier” for Nowitzki and the rest of their team.

So there you have it: Nowitzki described Ellis as “explosive,” and Carter, a.k.a. “Vinsanity” and “Half Man Half Amazing,” pointed out how “easy” Ellis makes the game. That makes Ellis pretty amazing himself.

Ellis should not be taken for granted in Mavs nation because he also aims to claim Dallas’ next shot at Finals glory.
