NBA Minnesota Timberwolves

Kevin Martin Leading Race For Most Improved Player

Kevin Martin

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Kevin Martin has been one of the best pure shooters in the NBA for quite some time now, but this season with the Minnesota Timberwolves he is being relied upon to step up his game and become a constant scoring threat. The Timberwolves were in the market for a dominant scoring shooting guard in the offseason, and it’s now clear they made the right choice going with the nine-year veteran and journeyman. Last year for the Oklahoma City Thunder Martin averaged just 14 points per game in his limited role, but as a key piece of the Timberwolves’ roster this year he is averaging a career high 25 points per game.

The Most Improved Player Award normally goes to a player who is returning from injury or came out of nowhere to have solid season for a winning team. Martin, however, has been a secondary option for a few years now but is coming up big as the Wolves’ main scoring threat through nine games played this season. The season is still young, but there are no signs showing Martin’s role will be decreasing anytime soon.

Although his shooting stroke is a bit unusual, Martin is hitting an astounding 52 percent of shots from three point land this season and 46 percent from the field. While Martin is already an established player in the league, if he keeps putting up these ridiculous numbers he simply cannot be ignored when it comes to the award voting at the end of the year.

Kevin Love has been the Timberwolves’ centerpiece for a few years now, but he has never been a dominant scorer down low — the reason they needed to bring in the sharpshooting Martin in the offseason. Martin provides the Wolves with a player who can drain the open three and gets to the free throw line at an incredible rate. Those are both characteristics of the elite scorers in the NBA, and soon Martin should find himself mentioned in the same breath as the other great scorers in the league.
