Philadelphia 76ers Must Get More Than Just Dion Waiters If They Choose to Trade Evan Turner

While the Philadelphia 76ers have been on their surprising run to start the 2013-14 NBA season, there has been a lot of focus put on the play of rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams and on the performance of center Spencer Hawes and deservedly so. Both players have been phenomenal and integral in the Sixers’ early success.

However, not nearly as much or enough has been said about the play of fourth-year guard/forward Evan Turner to start the year. In a contract year and finally getting put in more of a position to succeed, Turner has been a force for Philly thus far.

Through their first 15 games of the season, Turner is averaging a stellar 21.7 points, 3.6 assists and 6.9 rebounds in 36.9 minutes per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field, an efficiency mark noticeably improved from his career mark of only 43.1 percent. He’s been an offensive force.

As expected coming into the season considering the Sixers’ aspirations to tank and the fact that Turner is an expiring contract, Turner’s name is now coming up in trade discussions. The most recent and grounded talks have regarded a deal that would send Philadelphia Dion Waiters from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Turner, as reported by Chris Broussard of ESPN.

Though acquiring a young player like Waiters with potential fits into the plans of the Sixers, the organization has to be looking for more than just that with where Turner’s value is currently sitting. If they are going to deal Turner for Waiters, they have to look to either acquire another young asset or a draft pick to really consider the offer. If the trade involving Waiters and Turner happens and there’s not more than just Waiters coming to Philadelphia, I’ll be thoroughly surprise.
