Los Angeles Lakers’ Coach Believes Nick Young Is Sixth Man Worthy
Growing up in Los Angeles playing basketball Nick “Swaggy P” Young idolized Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, even mimicking Bryant’s moves while growing up. After a few short stops on other NBA teams his dreams have come true and he gets to don the Purple and Gold. To make matters even better for Young Lakers Head Coach Mike D’Antoni clearly has confidence in Young and is giving him plenty of minutes, which is leading to plenty of offensive production. According to Mark Medina and the LA Daily News, Coach MDA even considers Swaggy P a candidate for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
“He should. If we can get our record [good],” D’Antoni said. “That’s going to be the product of the team. He’s playing well enough. But if we surprise people, get in the playoffs and do really well, yeah, he’ll have a really good chance at it.”
One can’t help but agree as Young is averaging near 17 points a game in his current Sixth Man role. He has also been doing his best to greatly improve his defensive game, an area he has greatly suffered at in the past. Young even took a key charge in the Lakers recent win against the Detroit Pistons.
There is entirely too much of the NBA season left to do much more then speculate on the final result but Young is clearly on a quest to prove his worth to Laker Nation. Once Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant returns from his Achilles injury in the near future, it will alter Young’s scoring as well, but possibly for the better. With less pressure on Young to score, it becomes much easier for him to fall into a consistent rhythm night after night.
We shall see, but for now he’s calling himself “Swaggy D”
