Jameer Nelson Could Make Some Noise For Philadelphia 76ers

Former Saint Joseph’s University star and Orlando Magic starting point guard Jameer Nelson has taken a back step as a mentor. Nelson probably didn’t anticipate his career to be plagued by injuries. The Philadelphia 76ers could be a place for Nelson to fit in.

Nelson could fit into the Sixers’ plans even with Michael Carter-Williams starting at the point guard position. He could start alongside Carter-Williams in a one-two punch similar to the Sixers NBA Finals duo of Allen Iverson and Eric Snow.

Snow was a bigger and lesser-known player, but he fitted in as the team’s starting point guard while allowing Iverson to play in his natural scoring role. Nelson is similar to Iverson as far as they both are shooting guards in a point guard’s body and both are the same height.

Nelson would also be back in the Philadelphia area where he led one of the NCAA’s historic and rarely undefeated regular season teams as well as became a high school star. While the situation isn’t any better in Philadelphia the Sixers could give him a bigger role. The Sixers lack another back-court option besides Carter-Williams and he could also move over to the point whenever Carter-Williams rests.

Nelson wouldn’t fit in the Sixers long-term plans and he’s constantly injured. Plus, Nelson’s salary would hinder the Sixers chances of making much noise during the offseason.

The Sixers would also have to surrender a lot to get Nelson. Nelson makes over $8.6 million this season. Orlando would want Evan Turner, Tony Wroten and a draft pick in return.

His stats aren’t enough to sway the Sixers into making a deal for him. Nelson averages 11.7 points, 6.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game in 30.8 minutes.
