Coach Brett Brown expressed hope for Michael Carter-Williams’ return after the Philadelphia 76ers 130-94 loss to the Brooklyn Nets Monday night. The Sixers could use Carter-Williams’ help if they’re going to stop their quick descent into the NBA’s cellar.

Carter-Williams would certainly boost the Sixers in nearly every category. His presence would also cut the humiliating losses the Sixers have been suffering since Carter-Williams sat out.

Monday’s loss demonstrated the Sixers problems with their perimeter defense. They allowed the Nets Joe Johnson to set a season record with 10 three-pointers as well as allowed the Nets to shoot an impressive 60-percent from behind the arc.

It’s highly unlikely Carter-Williams returns in the next home game against the Nets on Friday. The Sixers may be using his injury as a strategy to “tank” while giving their star guard plenty time to recover from a knee infection.

Brown’s statement indicates that Carter-Williams may play soon. The earliest game he may return is against the Milwaukee Bucks, a team with a worse record. The Sixers have only one win, Carter-Williams may play limited minutes against a team he wouldn’t need to exhaust himself.

The good thing about the upcoming six-game road trip is the Sixers have a week-long gap before their west coast road swing. Carter-Williams will be rested by then.

Without Carter-Williams the Sixers are missing another scorer, passer, a fast-break player, defensive stopper and solid outside shooter. He’s the Sixers leading passer, stealer and second-leading scorer. Carter-Williams averages 17.7 points, 7.3 assists and 3.13 steals per game.

The Sixers are allowing their opponents to score 112 as they manage to average 94 points during this seven-game losing streak.
