Thaddeus Young Fair To Request Trade From Philadelphia 76ers
Midnight tonight, Dec. 19, is the deadline that the NBA world was hearing for the Houston Rockets to move disgruntled center Omer Asik. This is the date because if he is traded before tomorrow, the team that acquires him is allowed to trade him again before the trade deadline. The two teams most heavily involved in the Asik talks were the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers have the pieces that the Rockets would desire in Spencer Hawes and Thaddeus Young, because they each could stretch the floor and play alongside Dwight Howard, something Asik could not do. The Sixers also seemed to be the ideal fit because of the history between Rockets GM Daryl Morey and Sixers GM Sam Hinkie.
But it appears talks of an Asik trade have fallen through, for now, but the story to come out of all this regarding the Sixers was reported by Jake Fischer of Liberty Ballers. A source has indicated that Young’s agent had formally sent in a request for his client to be traded “weeks ago.” According to the source, Young is “ready to leave Philly” and he “isn’t with the whole tanking thing.”
Young has been a fan favorite in Philly for his entire career because of his blue collar work ethic and the way he always sacrifices his body by taking charges and diving on the floor for lose balls. But if the rumors are true regarding a request to be traded, I say good for Young, and he should want out.
I, for one, agree with Young in that I don’t think any player on this team should be buying into the tanking that Hinkie has implemented. The Sixers are currently 7-19 and have one of the worst defenses historically of all-time. Why would anyone want to be a part of this? Young has every right to ask for a trade, and Hinkie should have no problem granting him that wish. Hinkie would love to get his contract off the books, and he could get some pretty good value in return for him.
To put it frankly, Young is wasting his time, effort and body playing his heart out for a team whose management wants them to lose. Young deserves to go to a contender, and I applaud him for revolting from the tanking and wanting to get out of town. I don’t care how good the draft class is, there’s no place in professional sports for this and Young deserves better.
