Los Angeles Clippers Showing They’re in a Different League Than Golden State Warriors
Expectations going into this NBA regular season had the Los Angeles Clippers in tight race with the up-and-coming Golden State Warriors. The Warriors had an impressive 2012-13 season, including a postseason domination of a veteran Denver Nuggets team and a proven adversary in the eventual Western Conference Champion San Antonio Spurs. With a second year head coach, young jump shooters, and their All-Star forward posted up on the bench in street clothes, the Warriors surpassed expectations and caught the attention of the rest of the league.
On a more somber note, the Clippers found themselves on the losing end of a first round wrestling match with the Memphis Grizzlies. Although both organizations brought their laptops to the beach in the offseason, the Clippers were left with many questions marks on their existing roster while the Warriors left a league-wide impression of a team stacked with ascending talent.
The All-Star break is fast approaching, and the Clippers have positioned themselves as the class of the Pacific Division. Point guard Chris Paul has distanced himself from inspiring wannabees, including the Warriors soon-to-be All-Star guard Stephen Curry. Both Curry and Paul have displayed several impressive individual performances thus far this season, but for Curry his gaudy numbers only occasionally translate to wins.
Paul has dominated games both as a scorer and a passer. He has gotten more consistency out of his surrounding talent than Curry, even with a 16 point per game contribution from guard JJ Redick missing from the Clippers lineup. Yet the Clippers continue to survive long road trips and dominate the league’s elite while the Warriors fall to a Spurs team void of their three best players.
