Despite all the trade talks that have surrounded him in recent days, Omer Asik is still a member of the Houston Rockets. After a lot of rumors and reported deals that included the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics, the Rockets decided to hang on to the center after no deal was agreed on during this week.
Now, the organization has decided to take him off the trade block in what appears to be a puzzling decision to say the least. It’s worth noticing that Asik hasn’t stepped on the court lately as he is currently out of the rotation.
The Rockets are definitively taking a wrong approach to the situation and if they are expecting to move Asik sometime this season, they should give him enough minutes to showcase himself. That way, teams can get actually become interested in him based on what he can do on the hardwood.
Trading Asik is already hard based on what he brings to the table. He is a defense-first type of player with virtually no offensive game and a lofty contract that will pay him close to $15 million next year. Adding the fact that the Rockets are reportedly asking for a first-round pick to be included in the deal makes things even harder, so if the Rockets are decided to move him, their best option is to give him as many minutes as possible.
It is clear Asik’s future is not with the Rockets, and the best plan would be to expose him as much as possible without hurting the team’s record.
