Philadelphia 76ers: Evan Turner Is The Piece That Does Not Fit
Nobody gave a better reason as to why Evan Turner doesn’t fit into the future plans of the Philadelphia 76ers than Turner himself on Saturday night.
One night after hitting a driving layup that bounced around three times and fell in to beat the Brooklyn Nets, Turner gave a lackluster 10-point performance in a 116-106 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. That is par for the course for Turner with the Sixers since he came over as a first-round pick and the national college player of the year at Ohio State two years ago.
Turner is great one night and terrible the next. He sometimes gives outstanding effort on defense and sometimes plays lackadaisical defense. The evidence is there and has been there for awhile. With all of the new pieces new head coach Brett Brown is trying to fit in to make this a competitive team down the road, a piece that does not fit should be discarded.
Turner is one such piece. The Sixers know what they are getting in their most recent first-round draft choice Michael Carter-Williams – a guy with a motor that runs on all cylinders every night. Turner zooms one night and sputters the next. With Carter-Williams as the future point guard and a 7-footer in Nerlen Noels being a future complementary piece in the middle, the Sixers need to find a young, reliable shooter and hustler at the No. 2 spot who brings it every night.
Turner is not it. The sooner the team realizes it, the better it will be for all parties involved.
