5 Potential Landing Spots for Omer Asik

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Even though the Houston Rockets stated a few days ago that they no longer intend to trade disgruntled center Omer Asik, fans of the NBA should not buy into it. With a couple months until the NBA trade deadline, there is still plenty of time for the Rockets to find a proper suitor for Asik. For that reason, it is important for fans of multiple teams to be aware of the specific teams that could land the big man in the near future.

It appears several players on Houston would prefer that Asik stay put. The reason for that is because of what he brings off the bench in critical moments during a game, which will clearly be beneficial in the playoffs.

“He's great for our team,” Rockets guard James Harden said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “He's one of the best big men in the NBA, defensively as well. He complements our team so well. We're fortunate to have him on our team.”

“I know he has had a rough time, but the only thing we can do as a team is continue to lift him up, continue to try to help him understand that he is a big part of the team,” Dwight Howard said, according to the Chronicle. “I know he might not feel that way, but he is.”

Regardless of what the players think management will do what they believe is in the best interest of the team, which most likely means moving Asik in the coming months.

Boston Celtics

One of the more likely teams to acquire Asik in a trade appears to be the Boston Celtics. Rumors circulated that the Rockets and Celtics were in deep negotiations that could have seen Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee sent to Houston for Asik. However, it appears for now that Boston is no longer interested.

Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers just might be the clear favorites to land Asik in a trade prior to the deadline. The reason is because they are willing to trade Thaddeus Young, who would definitely be a player that would be beneficial to Houston’s playoff run. Even though fans want to see the 76ers tank to land a top draft pick, there’s no question they could use a player of Asik’s caliber in the starting lineup.

Brooklyn Nets

Even though the Brooklyn Nets stated they don’t intend to replace the injured Brook Lopez with a trade, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen at some point in the near future. I have to imagine the acquisition of Asik has definitely crossed the mind of Brooklyn’s management team, especially since Lopez is done for the season. Only time will tell if the Nets decide to take a gamble as the team’s record will certainly play a role in the decision.

New Orleans Pelicans

I have to imagine the Rockets would love nothing more than to trade Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans for Ryan Anderson, who has always played well with Howard. With that being said, Anderson is a valuable trade tool that the Pelicans may not want to waste on Asik. There’s no denying that Asik is a talented player, but New Orleans might be looking for a little more in return.

Milwaukee Bucks

Laugh now but never count the Milwaukee Bucks out at the trade deadline. Their record suggests that they should be selling instead of buying. With that being said, their insane amount of injuries and roster turnover is a big reason for the dismal season. That, along with the fact that owner Herb Kohl will never let his team go down, means the Bucks will continue to figure out how to improve the roster. Milwaukee has been rumored to be one of several teams interested in Asik.
