Charlotte Bobcats: Brendan Haywood Has Been Forgotten

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Can you name every current Charlotte Bobcats player off the top of your head? Yes? Well maybe you have forgotten someone: 12th-year center Brendan Haywood.

If you are a diehard Bobcats fan, I’m sure you would remember Haywood. However, for the casual NBA fan, it would be hard to remember that he was still a member of the Cats’ roster. Why exactly has his name been forgotten? Injury.

Charlotte took a big hit at the center position when they learned Haywood would be lost for an enormous period of time. On October 10, just weeks before the season was to get underway, it was announced that the former NBA champion would miss 12 weeks of time with a fractured left foot. Haywood has been immobilized since and forgotten in many fans’ minds due to his long absence.

I mean really, when was the last time you heard the name Brendan Haywood? Is his name forgotten because the Cats have had surprising success? Is it because people just don’t care about the weathered veteran anymore? I would say it is a mix of both, He really isn’t all that special of a piece to the team and to be honest, Haywood isn’t needed in Charlotte.

His injury was a big one, and with 13 years under his belt, he should call it a career if things don’t work out whenever he returns. With such a devastating injury that could come back at any time, I feel that the Cats shouldn’t even bother playing him an enormous amount of minutes whenever he hits the court again.

Haywood averaged 3.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game in 61 games for Charlotte last season. If he proves no good after he returns from a 12-week injury, should the Cats pull the plug on him? I say yes.

I am not choosing to count him out because everything is possible in the NBA. I just want to say that the chances of him returning strong is unlikely.
