Toronto Raptors Rumors: 5 Potential Landing Spots For DeMar DeRozan By The 2014 NBA Trade Deadline
5 Potential Landing Spots For DeMar DeRozan By The 2014 NBA Trade Deadline
Once upon a time the Toronto Raptors envisioned DeMar DeRozan as a potential franchise player. Those days are long gone, but he has proven himself to be a productive rotation member. A team stuck in NBA no-man’s land, the Raptors are seriously considering moving the former 9th overall pick if they can find the right deal.
DeRozan, an athletic two guard who can create his own shot and finish at the rim, is averaging 21 points and 3.4 assists per game on 32 percent three-point shooting this season. He may not be good enough to be a go-to guy on a championship team, but he can be the second or even third banana on a good team. He can struggle defensively at times, but you can hide that particular weakness in today’s league.
There are two kinds of teams that I can see trading for him this winter. The first is the most obvious -- a playoff contender who needs additional scoring from the backcourt. The second, although just as likely group are teams that need to shake things up by making a splashy move at the trade deadline. Things can get stagnant for an NBA team, and sometimes they just need a new face in the locker room to ratchet up the intensity on the court.
This year’s trade deadline is going to be more active than usual. Some teams are going to be trying to get better, but some are going to be trying to get much worse as they have their eyes set on the impressive talent entering the draft this summer.
These are the five teams that could be potential landing spots for DeMar DeRozan.
5. Los Angeles Lakers
We know that the Los Angeles Lakers don’t want any part of a long-term rebuilding process. With Kobe Bryant injured once again, trading for a scoring two-guard makes sense for a team that still thinks they can make the playoffs this year.
4. Charlotte Bobcats
The Charlotte Bobcats need a winning season, and they’re on the verge of one this year. Good on defense but only 29th in the league at scoring, they could use a swingman like DeRozan for their second-half playoff push.
3. Phoenix Suns
The surprise team of the year, the Phoenix Suns are legitimate playoff contenders in the Western Conference. They would have the go-to scorer that they need if they added DeRozan to their lineup.
2. Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies are a team stuck in a rut. They need to do something to shake things up, and nothing gets a stagnant team going more than a trade.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are rumored to be in the market to move swingman Dion Waiters. These two teams could do well to swap their disgruntled guards -- sometimes all they need is a change of scenery.
