After last night’s performance Jeff Teague deserves to be on the NBA All-Star team. Teague hit a game-winning buzzer beater to lift the Atlanta Hawks to victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in double overtime. The battle between Teague and Kyrie Irving showcased two of the top point guards in possibly the game of the year in the NBA. Irving scored 40 points and dished out eight assists in an impressive performance, but Teague stole the show at the end. He went off for a career-high 34 points while recording 14 assists in a clutch performance to pull out the win. To go along with his buzzer-beater, he also hit a deep three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Last night, Teague proved to the whole league why he deserves a spot on the NBA All-Star team for the Eastern Conference.

His performance was just one of many this year with the Hawks. Under new coach Mike Budenholzer, Teague is having a breakout year in the new offensive scheme. He is posting career-highs in multiple categories and has been a vital piece to Atlanta’s early success this season.

After last night’s game, Teague is averaging 16.8 points, 8.2 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game for the Hawks. Numbers like that are definitely worthy of an appearance in the NBA All-Star Game in my opinion. When you compare his statistics to some of the other candidates, it becomes apparent that Teague deserves a spot. He leads all point guards in the East with 10 double-doubles this season. He’s second in assists per game behind only John Wall. The 16.8 points per game he averages makes him fifth in the East in scoring, too. However, what really separates Teague from the rest of the other point guards is the record of his team. Irving and Wall are having good years, but despite their impressive performances both of their teams have losing records. Teague, on the other hand, has led the Hawks to the No.3 seed and a 16-13 record.

Teague definitely deserves a spot in the NBA All-Star Game as a representative for the Eastern Conference when you factor everything in. His numbers on the season and leadership on the court have led Atlanta to a winning record which is something no other All-Star candidate at the point guard position can claim. For this reason, I think it’s time for Teague to earn the respect and recognition he deserves by being rewarded with a spot on the NBA All-Star team.
