Greg Monroe Continues To Be Least Of Detroit Pistons’ Worries
Greg Monroe is having a decent season with the Detroit Pistons, so why aren’t the Pistons over the .500 mark? There are various reasons for that, but Monroe’s play has nothing to do with the Pistons’ failure to have a winning record so far. He’s been a consistent force inside for the most part this season.
If anything, Monroe has helped the Pistons flirt with the .500 mark and be a better team than they were a year ago. They’re struggling right now but Monroe has been doing more good for the team than bad.
Consider the fact that he volunteered to step aside from the center spot and let Andre Drummond do his thing. That strategy has mostly worked. Monroe has an average of 14.5 points, 8.9 points and 0.6 blocks per game. His career marks are 13.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and 0.6 blocks. He’s obviously scoring a little better, and the move hasn’t impacted other parts of his game.
His minutes per game of 33.1 is up slightly from 31.1 minutes in his career. Monroe is shooting 50.7 percent from the floor, down slightly from his 51.2 percent career mark. He’s shooting 62.8 percent in free throws, which is down slightly from his career. The Pistons’ coaches wouldn’t mind seeing Monroe be more of a shot-blocking threat.
Monroe could obviously shoot a little better, but overall, he’s been a bright spot for the Pistons. It’s the new faces like Josh Smith and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope who need to do a better job of hitting their shots. Monroe’s the least the Pistons’ worries right now.
