New Orleans Pelicans Rumors: Team Has Tough Task Ahead Trying to Deal Eric Gordon
The New Orleans Pelicans have had a difficult time with SG Eric Gordon, and apparently they are ready to entertain trade offers to get some frontcourt help to pair with up-and-coming superstar Anthony Davis.
With Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson sidelined for an extended period of time, Gordon seems to be one of the best scoring options on the team. But it appears the organization would like to throw the season away and look to try and get lottery pick in the upcoming draft.
That is not going to be easy. Gordon has a hefty contract – he is slated to make around $44 million between this year and the upcoming two ones – and it doesn’t seem likely that the Pelicans and Gordon could be parting ways anytime soon.
The biggest concern with Gordon is definitely the health issues that have been attacking him in recent years. He has only played 51 out of 148 games, and until he can show an ability to stay on the court on a consistent basis it doesn’t seem likely that many teams will inquire seriously for him.
The other reason why most teams could be reluctant to make a move for Gordon – contract aside – is that he could have commitment issues. The word around several executives is that Gordon hasn’t played all he could because he has been mad at the Pelicans’ front office since the moment he wasn’t allowed to move to the Phoenix Suns. That is also seen as a huge red flag going forward.
There’s no question that Gordon has been healthy and playing better this season – 15.6 points in 43.9 percent shooting this year – but his production and the obvious concerns don’t match the contract he signed for. The Pelicans might not receive fair value in return for the shooting guard, and they will clearly have a tough time trying to move him this year.
If they keep Gordon expect him to continue to play at a high level and carry this team. Be sure to watch Gordon while you can and get you Pelicans tickets today.
