The Philadelphia 76ers had tryouts recently, as they are in search of a center. The search has led them to shot-blocking center Dewayne Dedmon.

Dedmon is an inexpensive pickup for a rebuilding team looking for anybody who can fill in and play defense. Dedmon is a low-risk and someone who will help a lackluster defense temporarily until big men Lavoy Allen and Arnett Moultrie return.

The Sixers released center Daniel Orton, so they are looking to fill an undermanned frontcourt devastated by injuries. Dedmon became an inside presence for Golden State Warriors D-League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors this season. He averaged 15.2 points, 13.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.5 steals in 15 games for them.

Though Dedmon probably won’t last longer than the length of his 10-day contract, the signing gives the Sixers an inside presence on both ends of the floor. If he plays well, the Sixers can cut Spencer Hawes‘ minutes and move backup Allen to his more natural power forward spot.

The 7-foot, 255 pound center competed for the final roster spot against more seasoned players Kyrylo Fesenko, Hamady N’Diaye and Jarvis Varnado. The former University of Southern California player had a brief NBA stint with the Warriors.

Rebounding hasn’t been the Sixers’ weak area, but they could use Dedmon’s size to grab the offensive rebounds whenever they shoot three-pointers. The Sixers are 29th in the league in three-point shooting; they made just 32.6-percent behind the arc.

They’re also terrible defenders this season, as they rank last in points allowed with 110.9 per game. Most importantly is that the addition of Dedmon will give the Sixers a big body to clog the middle.
