2014 NBA All-Star Game: Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey Upset His Players Left Out of Starters

The starters for the 2014 NBA All-Star Game were announced on Thursday night and, despite a few minor possible snubs and the fact that injured guard Kobe Bryant was named a starter for the Western Conference, things played out relatively smoothly. All in all, there’s not too much to get up in arms about.

However, that didn’t stop some people from getting a little riled up over the starters. Most notably, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressed his displeasure with the results of the fan voting, lambasting the fact that neither James Harden nor Dwight Howard made the cut.

Morey took to Twitter to express his anger at the results, sending out the following three tweets:

Though Morey is a brilliant basketball mind, a front office member on the forefront of advances statistics and analytics, and a generally entertaining guy, it’s possible that he’s taking things a little too personally and missing the point of the new voting system.

While he’s right that there are no centers in the starting lineup for either conference, the backcourt/frontcourt voting system was not designed to gerrymander (Morey’s word) centers out of the vote, but rather to give fans the opportunity to have flexibility in their votes. After all, there were so many power forwards that had legitimate cases to be starters in the West that even having Kevin Love and Blake Griffin, two of the league’s best, left some people screaming about snubs.

I’m all for a general manager or any person of that mold standing up for his team and players, but Morey seems to be slightly off-base in this instance. Should either Howard or Harden be the replacement player for the injured Kobe Bryant? Probably. However, I don’t really see the need for the Rockets GM to cry foul about neither of his players being voted in initially.
