The Chicago Bulls normally don’t make many moves during the season. Once their superstar guard Derrick Rose went down with another season ending knee injury, they had to react quickly. The Bulls looked around the waiver wire for a point guard and found DJ Augustin floating around. That investment of picking up Augustin is paying huge dividends and he has the Bulls playing their best basketball so far.
Augustin was cut by the Toronto Raptors earlier in the year and was just sitting around waiting for the right opportunity. The Bulls were in the market for a backup point guard and made a terrific choice. Augustin has been a jolt of energy for the sometimes stagnant Bulls’ offense. He is playing many minutes, especially since Kirk Hinrich continues to get injured. He follows coach Tom Thibodeau’s motto, which is next man up and be ready.
It’s somewhat unbelievable that a talent like Augustine could never catch a break in his career. He was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats in 2008 and bounced around a few teams before settling with the Bulls. The surprising thing is how he fitted right in the Bulls’ system.
His game mirrors that of Rose’s game. He is lightning quick with the ball in his hand, has a quick first step and can finish at the rim. Now he’s not as explosive as Rose going to the rim, but he can get there. His shooting skills is a little better than Rose and he is a dynamic playmaker.
The Bulls organization knew what they were doing when they acquired Augustin. They got a heady and unselfish point guard and he is providing the Bulls with everything and more.
