If the playoffs started right now in the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks would be the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Now, this is both good and bad for Dallas. It’s good because they’d be back in the playoffs after taking a hiatus last season. It’s bad, though, because they would be matched up with the Oklahoma City Thunder at the present moment. The Thunder have pretty much had their way with the Mavs since the Western Conference Finals in 2011.
Obviously the Mavs want to move up the ladder in the west and there is plenty of time for them to do that. However, the Mavs haven’t been the most consistent team this year. The Mavs have put together one winning streak of four games this season and a couple of three-game winning streaks.
After a disappointing three-game road trip in which the Mavs lost two of the games, they return home for a four-game home stand. They will also play five of six at the American Airlines Center. This is a time for the Mavs to start putting together something. A team that will win two and then lose two is not going to do anything in the playoffs.
It would be nice for Dallas to put together a streak of good games before the All-Star break. I think the Mavs need this just as much as the fans need to see it. Confidence will go a long way for a team. Even though teams will tell they have all the confidence in the world, if they don’t play like it, it’s hard to believe it. Hopefully they can start doing it for the fans.
