The majority of basketball fans would agree that it’s too early to start talking about the 2014 offseason. Of course, there’s already been a fair amount of speculation regarding the upcoming summer and the big name players who could be switching teams. It’s too early, but certainly not surprising to see chatter about the upcoming offseason before we even make it to the All-Star break. That’s just the sports world we live in today. But when it comes to speculatory rumors, this one takes the cake – the Brooklyn Nets want to acquire Kevin Durant… in 2016.

That’s right, we officially have our first rumor regarding the free agent class of 2016.

To me, this whole thing is just laugh out loud funny. Should the Nets want to acquire one of the game’s top players? Of course they should. But should they be thinking that far down the road? No way.

I know it hasn’t been the greatest of seasons in Brooklyn this year, but come on. There’s plenty of basketball yet to be played in 2014 and how could anyone in the organization truly be thinking that far ahead?

When it comes to these types of rumors, you really never know what to believe. Obviously, you can understand why the Nets would want Durant. But there are just way too many ‘what ifs’ and unknowns that can take place between now and the summer of 2016.

It’s not out of the question for KD to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder. But if he wins a championship in OKC, there’s no way he’s leaving town.
