5 Teams That Need to Target Pau Gasol at NBA Trade Deadline
5 Teams That Need Pau Gasol
The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, Feb. 20, but for a while now the Los Angeles Lakers have had Pau Gasol's name floating around trade rumors. Kobe Bryant even told Los Angeles media, "if (Pau's) not in trade discussions, it's not a normal season." Gasol has been rumored in many trade scenarios for the Lakers as Los Angeles has tried to go after such players like Rajon Rondo, Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony. To be realistic, there are a lot of interesting teams that a 7-foot center could find himself playing for. There are also a lot of interesting trades the Lakers could make with Pau.
Gasol has had a great career. He has won Rookie of the Year, he is a four-time All-Star and has won two NBA championships. Gasol is currently averaging 18.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
Pau has a lot of talent. He would provide a lot of help, either to a franchise in the rebuilding phase or to a franchise trying to be a contender.
The Lakers have a high price tag on Gasol, but here is a look into five teams that could use the 7-footer on their roster.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers were in trade rumors with Los Angeles not long ago. There were rumors that the two franchises were looking to make a big man deal and trade Andrew Bynum for Pau Gasol.
This deal never happened, but Cleveland still needs Gasol. Bynum didn't work out in Cleveland, and they could use Gasol to upgrade their center position. Cleveland's No. 1 overall draft pick, Anthony Bennett, is a failure. Gasol would be a great frontcourt addition for Cleveland next to Luol Deng.
4. New York Knicks
The New York Knicks and the Lakers have been in trade rumors together for a while as the Lakers have been interested in Carmelo Anthony. New York has more than just Melo to offer as a trading chip. The Knicks also have Iman Shumpert and Tyson Chandler.
The Knicks are in desperate need for a big man, Gasol could be a fit. Their recent pick-up, Andrea Bargnani, has been a bust this season. A trade between the Lakers and Knicks not involving Carmelo could possibly benefit both franchises.
3. Chicago Bulls
The Chicago Bulls would be a great and interesting fit for Pau Gasol. Head coach Tom Thibodeau could properly utilize all of Gasol's skills.
The Bulls already have Joakim Noah, but Gasol would be an upgrade at the center position. Adding Pau would shorten the "rebuilding" phase that Derrick Rose wants no part in. Gasol is a good defender and could even fill Noah's role if Chicago decided to use him in the trade.
This could be an interesting deal where both franchises could help each other out.
2. Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are currently in one of their best seasons as a franchise. They are exciting to watch and an extremely talented team.
Trading for Gasol would make sense for the Warriors. Gasol is a true center and an amazing interior defender -- two things that Golden State needs. He is also an intelligent veteran who can provide locker room and championship experience to a team that currently has no champions on it.
The Warriors are looking to make a run this postseason, and Gasol is the type of player to help that playoff push. The Warriors also have a few trading pieces that could be interesting to the Lakers.
1. Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns are currently 28-18 and in sixth place in the Western Conference.
This offseason, the Suns traded away their big man, Marcin Gortat, to the Washington Wizards. The Suns' current center is Miles Plumlee, so Gasol would be a huge upgrade for Phoenix at the center position.
Phoenix is a talented franchise with young players that keep finding a way to win in the tougher Western Conference. Adding Gasol to their lineup would make them a bigger threat come playoff time. The Suns also have what the Lakers want -- draft picks.
