At one point, it looked as if the Memphis Grizzlies would go from the NBA Western Conference Finals to rock bottom, all in one season. The loss of Marc Gasol to a knee injury was almost too much for the Grizzlies to overcome, but then the giant returned and Memphis seems to be a serious contender in the West.
Since Gasol’s return, the Grizzlies are 9-1 and are currently enjoying a six-game win streak after a 99-90 victory over the league’s worst team, the Milwaukee Bucks. Before the return of Gasol, Memphis was 17-19, way outside the playoff race, but now they are 26-20 and the eighth spot out West.
I have said it before and I will say it again, you have to like this team. Gasol is a fantastic big man who’s combination of power and finesse is hard for any opponent to guard. Put Gasol alongside Zack Randolph with Tony Allen and Mike Conley feeding them, heck that is a solid lineup. Not to mention that the Grizzlies have proven they can throw a monkey wrench into the playoff picture. After all, they did defeat the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Semis, an unexpected fate.
With Gasol back and healthy, the other teams in the league should worry. The duo of Randolph and Gasol may arguably be the best in the Association right now. I don’t think that they are capable of a championship, but I do think that Memphis has another shot at the WCFs. Now that it is February, we are beginning to see the true colors of teams. It looks like the Grizzlies are only beginning to show us what they can do.
