5 NBA Teams That Need Spencer Hawes

intro

One of the most fascinating times of the year on the NBA calender is nearly upon us -- the trade deadline. Some teams are looking for that final piece to put them over the top, while others are trying to sell the farm and build for the future.

It makes for some interesting and often splashy moves that shake up the NBA landscape. The calendar has now turned to February and that is where the trade action really starts to heat up. There are certain players that could really help out contending teams that unfortunately are stuck on mediocre to flat out bad basketball teams.

The top teams in the Eastern and Western Conference could always use added pop off the bench, and every team that wants to play far in May and June is looking for depth, especially at the power forward and center positions.

Enter Spencer Hawes. He is a true stretch center who has range out to the three point range and can simply fill it up when called upon. Unfortunately for him, he is stuck on a Philadelphia 76ers that is headed into the tank. They are one of the five worst teams in basketball, as expected, in a re-building year under a first year head coach in Brett Brown.

The fact is, Hawes could help out a ton of contending teams as a big man that provides instant offense off the bench, and there is no doubt that teams will come calling. Regardless of his free agent status at the end of the season, he could make a heck of a rental for a contender needing that final push.

Let's take a look at five teams that need Spencer Hawes.

5. San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have been in a bit of a rut lately. Their depth has been tested, as there have been injuries and inconsistencies on the bench. Spencer Hawes would make for an excellent reserve for the legend himself, Tim Duncan. He could give Duncan the rest he needs at points in the regular season and postseason, and provide excellent offense off the bench.

4. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a lot going for them, but scoring off the bench isn't one of them. While Jeremy Lamb looks like an intriguing prospect, he has yet to find that consistency. Spencer Hawes would give them instant offense off the bench and provide a change of pace for the offensively challenged Kendrick Perkins.

3. Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are looking to find scoring anyway they can get it. With Derrick Rose shelved again and Luol Deng gone in a trade, offense has been tough to come by. Spencer Hawes would help in that department. He would be a nice offensive complement to defensive stalwart Joakim Noah.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves have two studs in the paint in Kevin Love and Nik Pekovic. What they are missing is a big man that can fill it up off the bench -- enter Spencer Hawes. He would be a huge upgrade over guys like Ronny Turiaf and Dante Cunningham as a scoring big off the bench. He may even help give the Wolves the extra fire power they need to make a playoff push.

1. Portland Trail Blazers

Spencer Hawes is a Seattle boy, so going back to the Pacific Northwest would be a treat for him. The Blazers could also use him; besides Lamarcus Aldridge they don't have a lot of offensive pop from their big men. Hawes would give them that and then some. The Blazers will need to make a splash at the deadline if they want to keep up with the likes of the Thunder and Spurs, and this could be that splash.
