5 Teams That Need Carmelo Anthony

It's a new year, but some things never change. Once again, as the NBA season heads into February, trade talk surrounding Carmelo Anthony is heating up as they do every year. Since entering the league in 2003, Anthony has been known as a prolific scorer who can light it up from anywhere on the court. Anthony's lack of skills in the other facets of basketball and the lack of talent surrounding him on the New York Knicks have made it difficult for him to have much success over his career.

While Carmelo may never win a title on his own in New York, he is a supremely talented player who could help another team win a title, especially a team with enough surrounding pieces around for support. It's clear that Carmelo is one of the league's best players still even while struggling for much of this season, as evidenced by a 37.5 points per game average over the latest four-game winning streak for the Knicks, including a 62-point outburst.

While the Knicks would certainly like to keep Anthony around, he is set to become a free agent after this season. Despite some recent success over the last week using Carmelo in a small-ball lineup, the Knicks probably don't have the pieces to win a championship even with Carmelo over the next couple of seasons. Therefore, the team may be better served to get something in return for Anthony.

It seems that rumors constantly swirl around possible destinations for Carmelo, and here are five teams that should attempt to acquire Carmelo this month.

5. Los Angeles Lakers

For the Los Angeles Lakers, acquiring Carmelo would accomplish two things. First, it would give Kobe Bryant another player to share the scoring load on a nightly basis. Second, if the Lakers choose not to retain Bryant in the future, they can pass the torch to Carmelo as the face of the franchise.

4. Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns certainly have enough young pieces to entice the Knicks in a trade. A potential trade for Anthony would allow Carmelo to pair up possibly with Goran Dragic, who has really stepped up in a major way this season. Although a young team, the Suns could take a step in the right direction by acquiring Carmelo this season.

3. Chicago Bulls

As the team that has been rumored to be the favorite to acquire Carmelo either through trade or free agency this summer, the Chicago Bulls certainly have reason to explore all possibilities. Having both Anthony and Derrick Rose gets the Bulls ever closer to a championship. Most of the recent NBA champions have had multiple superstars, and Carmelo certainly fits the bill as one given his pedigree.

2. Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have had a lot of playoff success in the last two seasons, but have fallen short of reaching the finals both times. The Grizzlies are built upon good defense with good individual defenders such as Marc Gasol. Acquiring Carmelo could give Memphis the offensive punch needed to put the team over the top, and the defensive strength of the other players could make up for Carmelo's defensive deficiencies.

1. Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors would certainly be a good fit for Carmelo's skill set. Playing alongside Stephen Curry, teams would be unable to account for the offensive shooting potential from Carmelo and the other good offensive players on the Warriors.
