Dallas Mavericks video coordinator and player development coach Mike Shedd was kind of back to his usual, comfortable self at halftime of last night’s victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Of course, that was largely due to the return of Shedd’s buddy, Mavericks television analyst Jeff ‘Skin’ Wade, who took Friday night’s game off while traveling to New York City for the Super Bowl.
Just about every local NBA telecast features the sideline reporter interviewing a particular assistant coach at halftime. Some are awkward, some are beyond dull, but the Mavericks’ halftime chat with Wade and Shedd is always fun. The two have a great rapport, and why not? Being blindsided at halftime by some pretty, blonde female sideline reporter can lead to awkward exchanges, so Wade, who likes to clown around (and is obviously not some hot blonde), naturally loosens up Shedd and makes him feel comfortable.
That comfort level was apparently absent on Friday night, in spite of the fact Shedd reassured Mavericks television commentator Mark Followill by saying, “Mark, you’re good with me, baby, but I like ‘Skin’, too.” No, Shedd, you were robotic during the exchange Friday night and didn’t even wink at the end of the interview (he always winks!).
However, the wink fortunately returned last night. It always happens right after the interview concludes while Wade sends it back to Followill — Shedd will look at the camera and wink. Normally, that wink is preceded by a humorously pointless question from Wade, but Wade failed to deliver that for the first time this season. Let’s hope and pray that Wade doesn’t desert Shedd for a Super Bowl party again next year.
