Every NBA fan is closely watching the rumor mill, and has been for the last few weeks or so. With the trade deadline approaching on February 20th, this year’s trade rumors have been more intense and widespread than recent years. The reason why? This summer, there are going to be a multitude of big name free agents to go after, and teams want to clear cap space.
But, what about teams that don’t necessarily have the space to go after a max-deal type of player? The Washingotn Wizards fit that mold right now, and prior to the trade deadline they could end up pulling off a big-time deal that would help them now rather than in the future.
According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the Wizards are the “top suitor” for Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe.
“In fact sources close to the situation peg Washington as the top suitor for Detroit’s Greg Monroe… The Wizards have trade chips. They have the ending contract of Trevor Ariza and Marcin Gortat,” Kyler said. “Rookie Otto Porter has been mentioned more than once as has second year guard Bradley Beal.”
At 24-24, the Wizards are currently the number five seed in the East, which is wide open. The possibility of adding one of the better young big men in the game would do wonders for their playoff push in the end.
Right now, John Wall is playing some of the best basketball out of all the point guards in the NBA – thus his All-Star bid. He noted prior to the season that he was tired of losing, as well as the fact that he wanted to be the best point guard in the league. For Wall to come out with the goal of not only making the playoffs, but putting his name above all other point guards shows his desire to win.
Giving Wall a guy like Monroe to be able to feed and work off of in the post would not only improve his game, but it would improve Washington’s chances of competing in the playoffs. Wall has essentially run this team in 2013-2014 and for him to have a teammate such as Monroe could be something exciting to watch
Washington has to get this deal done. The Pistons are rumored to want to get rid of Monroe, anyway, because of the addition of Josh Smith to the roster. If the Pistons see value in the Wizards’ expiring deals, they should also be intrigued. Both franchises could be put in better position if a deal involving Monroe and a combination of the rumored players from the Wizards.
