Though the trade talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns regarding Pau Gasol appeared to have stalled, they are far from over. Gasol may miss around 10 days or so due to a groin injury, but Los Angeles is still serious about moving him prior to the trade deadline on February 20th.
The Suns, meanwhile, are continuing to make it known that they would like to acquire Gasol. Not only that, but they have the means to do so. Phoenix may have two first round picks from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Washington Wizards, which are exactly what the Lakers have been seeking — at least one first round pick.
The talks between Phoenix and Los Angeles are expected to resume and continue up until the trade deadline bowls over. What exactly could a potential deal look like?
The Suns will almost certainly end up dealing Emeka Okafor before this year’s deadline, and he might be headed to the Lakers in a potential Gasol deal. Phoenix will also have to include a pick in the deal, which means Gasol and his expiring contract worth over $19 million could be sent to the Suns.
Los Angeles has been trying to trade Gasol for a while now, it seems. With the way Phoenix has played this season, Gasol could help push them even further in their playoff quest. The good news for the Suns, is that a whole lot of cap room will be opened up this summer with Gasol’s contract off the books — unless, of course, they choose to retain him.
Phoenix is one of the teams that everyone is expecting to make at least one deal, so don’t be shocked if Gasol winds up with the Suns. How he gets there, exactly, remains to be seen. As it unfolds, we’ll have the latest for you here, so continue to check back over the next week and a half.
