Tough Losses Will Come Back to Haunt Memphis Grizzlies

Between all the injuries and obstacles this season, the Memphis Grizzlies still find themselves very alive in a tight playoff battle in the NBA West, but the continue to hurt their own chances with tough losses.

The latest debacle for Memphis was their overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday evening by a score of 91-83. The defeat dropped the Grizzlies to 27-23, further behind the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, who control the seventh and eighth spots.

When 100 percent healthy, Memphis can challenge the best of teams in the league. With a dominant frontcourt duo in Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph guided by a smart backcourt of Mike Conley and Tony Allen, they are more than capable of returning to the Western Conference Finals. But if they can’t get healthy and stay healthy, then the Grizzlies will not make the playoffs.

Still, a healthy Memphis team still might not be enough to earn a postseason bid due to some tough losses this season that includes Sunday evening’s loss to Cleveland, which was more than winnable for the Grizzlies. They are now 2-2 in overtime games and 15-8 versus teams below .500. That isn’t terrible, but when their record against teams above .500 is 12-15, those games against sub-.500 teams become so much more important.

There is still plenty of time for Memphis to get healthy and figure it out. They have not begun to dig their own graves yet and are only two and half games back of eighth place. If they do want to make the playoffs, they will need to win those close games and handle the subpar teams, especially with the current injuries to the roster. The remaining schedule is chock full of easily winnable games, leaving the destiny of the Grizzlies in their own hands.
