At one point Tyson Chandler was a main catalyst for one of the biggest upsets in NBA Finals history. When the Dallas Mavericks upset the Miami Heat, Chandler was praised for his great defense and rim protecting ability. That season Chandler won the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and during the summer after the Finals he cashed in signing a lucrative deal with the New York Knicks. Fast forward to now and you can see that Chandler is the most overrated player in the NBA.
This is Chandler’s 13th season in the NBA and he has always been known as a defensive specialist. He is a guy who protects the rim and boards on both ends of the floor. The only points he scores are on alley-oops. He has only averaged double-digit points four times in his career, and he has only averaged double-digit rebounds three times in his career.
So why was he signed to a four-year contract making $13 million a year? Well he was hyped up so much by the media after the Mavericks’ stunning upset of the Heat that his value skyrocketed. Sure Chandler looked like an All-Star when he was guarding the softest player in the league in Chris Bosh. All it took was for one team to overpay him. Enter the Knicks.
There are high school players who bring more to the table offensively than Chandler. He has shown little consistency in hitting a jumper, can’t post up and he is a below average free-throw shooter. Now I know most people love his hustle and tenacity, but the man makes $13 million a year.
Chandler has also shown wear and tear since he has been in New York. He has also been shown to be overpowered by centers who can actually play offense like Roy Hibbert. If you can recall last year’s playoffs, Hibbert dominated Chandler and made him look like a fool.
Now the Knicks are stuck with an overpaid center who can’t score, is slowing down on defense and complains about his coach’s system. Chandler might have a ring and might have won a Defensive Player of the Year Award, but he is as overrated as they come. The sad part is that the Knicks were counting on him to be apart of a big three to counter the Heat.
The Knicks have to endure one more season of Chandler after the conclusion of this season. If other teams are smart they won’t give Chandler 75 percent of the money that the Knicks gave him.
