This is why Billy King wanted Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce wearing a Brooklyn Nets jersey this season.
The time has finally come for them to earn those large paychecks and stop living off their reputations. They gave much to the Nets this season, but now it’s time to reach deep down and muster more of that championship mojo that the organization hopes will rub off on the rest of the roster.
Deron Williams has had success in the postseason, but he has never won a champion like Garnett and Pierce. The Nets will need their leadership and wisdom as the second half begins and their march towards the playoffs kicks into gear. The intensity Garnett has brought into their defensive philosophy has changed the team from pretender to contender over the last month and half. Pierce continues to have an up and down campaign, but I still believe he will put is mark on this season soon enough.
The leadership is there and the other players have seem to have fallen in line right behind the duo. However, the question still remains, will they have enough left in their tank when the playoffs roll around? Can Garnett and Pierce be the same players that led the Boston Celtics to back-to back NBA Finals, or will age and missed opportunities be their downfall again?
The Nets are in position to make a serious run, but the leadership of Garnett and Pierce will decide how far the team actually goes.
