Philadelphia 76ers Have Many Choices Other Than Top Three Lottery Picks
Tanking has been one of the main topics dominating the Philadelphia 76ers and NBA discussions all season long. New commissioner Adam Silver has put his own twist on the “tanking” craze by saying teams are rebuilding. Though this issue seems obvious, this shouldn’t pose a problem, as this year’s draft has an abundance of talent.
It’s no secret the Sixers have thrown in the towel once they traded All-Star Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans for someone who has been recovering from a torn ACL. The Sixers appear to be on their way to selecting the top pick. If the ping pong balls don’t go their way, it’s not an omen of things to come.
Projected top three lottery picks Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins appear to be franchise players, but aren’t the only players who make this year’s draft deep. Julius Randle, Noah Vonleh, Dante Exum and Marcus Smart would be just as valuable.
If the Sixers stay in their current position, the worst they can do is select fifth. NBAdraft.net has Indiana Hoosiers power forward Vonleh as the fifth pick. Vonleh would be a perfect complement to center Nerlens Noel, as he’s a double-double player who would give the Sixers another rebounder and inside scorer. Vonleh averages 11.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
Aside from Vonleh, the Sixers’ best option would be drafting Australian phenom Exum. The lanky 6-foot-6, 188 pound guard would boost the backcourt — he and point guard Michael Carter-Williams would immediately give the Sixers a big backcourt.
Exum is a combo guard whose quickness and court vision would bolster the Sixers’ backcourt; Exum and Carter-Williams can switch time between shooting and point guard. Exum’s quickness gives the Sixers the explosive scorer they’ve been coveting since the departure of slasher Andre Iguodala.
Though the top three players are the most sought after, the Sixers can still find their franchise player outside of the top three.
