Shot Blocking Has Been Philadelphia 76ers' Biggest Problem On Defense

Defense is a problem for the Philadelphia 76ers. Their problem on defense is their shot-blocking, as they rank near the bottom of the league in blocks.

Blocking shots has been a tough task for the Sixers all season, and it’s something their coaching staff will need to work on. It appears their big men stand around to allow opponents to score unguarded.

Spencer Hawes is the only player who averages over a block per game, but his numbers are low as well; he averages 1.25 blocks per game. Hawes didn’t even crack the top 10 in that category and he’s been the only inside presence the Sixers have this season.

This is a major reason the Sixers allow a league high 110.4 points per game. Their frontcourt players lack the defensive prowess to alter opponents’ shots, as they average 4.1 blocks per game. Their opponents do a better job playing defense inside, as their opponents hold a 3.4 blocks per game advantage, making it tough for the Sixers to win. The Sixers allow a league high 7.5 blocks per game.

Injuries to forward Arnett Moultrie and top draft pick Nerlens Noel really hurt the Sixers with their inside defense, and they need to do a better job protecting the paint. Despite being plagued by injuries, especially to their frontcourt, the Sixers have to focus on getting their frontcourt to attempt to block shots.

The Sixers currently have a 15-39 record. However, once they start trying to block shots the wins should increase. With a frontcourt of Hawes, Lavoy Allen, Moultrie and Brandon Davies, the Sixers should emphasize defense, something all four haven’t done much this season.
