It has just been reported that former Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom will sign to play overseas in Spain for the remainder of the 2014 season. This comes as sort of a shock as Odom has lived in the shadows since his alleged drug problem. Odom was said to be training to make an NBA return, but with no teams biting at the time, this was the right decision for him.
After coming off another awful season, Odom received interest from both the Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers to re-sign, but his personal life interfered with any deal that was in place. This was surely a sad way to go out in the NBA as he has given so much time and effort toward solidifying himself as one of the best all-around bench players in the league.
Certainly this is uplifting news mainly because everybody was out rooting for Odom to clean himself up even if he didn’t re-sign with an NBA team. He was such a beloved player during the entirety of his career especially during his tenure with the Lakers.
Odom played a key part in back-to-back championships with the Lakers in both 2009 and 2010. During his final season with the team, Odom was named Sixth Man of the Year after having possibly his best career season. But that was the final time he put on a Lakers jersey as he was sent to the Dallas Mavericks and then from the Mavericks to the Clippers in the subsequent season.
Who knows; Odom may be preparing to make one last run at reviving his NBA career with this recent signing overseas. The experience can’t hurt at this point.
