Despite suffering loss after loss this season, the Los Angeles Lakers have something positive to take away. This positive is that the team will, in all likelihood, receive a top five draft pick in what is supposedly the best draft in 10 years. Numerous prospects have the potential to be drafted first overall, including Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker.
The best fit moving forward for the Lakers would most definitely be Embiid. It is no secret that Los Angeles loves having a star center on the team, so drafting Embiid would be the logical choice. He may not rise to superstar status immediately, but Embiid seems to have the skill set to evolve into a franchise players in a couple of years. A 7-footer that can run the floor as well as Embiid is extremely difficult to come by.
One NBA player that appears to be a valid comparison would be Andre Dru,mmond. Both players are athletic 7-footers that have endless amounts of potential. The reason why the Lakers must draft him is because the team needs to try and build around the assumption that they have a legitimate shot at signing Kevin Love. Love is not the best defender out there, but pairing him with a big, strong center like Nikola Pekovic seems to be the way to make up for his defensive deficiencies.
The front line of Embiid and Love could boost the Lakers into contention if surrounded by other pieces. Los Angeles has both the cap space to achieve these goals and the draft position to do so. It’s only a matter of executing and maybe even trading up a spot or two to snag Embiid.
