We all know the Philadelphia 76ers are in position to draft Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid or Jabari Parker. What many don’t realize is they have another lottery pick.
At this point, they would have the second and 11th picks in this year’s NBA Draft. NBAdraft.net predicts the Sixers will use the 11th pick to select Creighton standout Doug McDermott. Of course, the website doesn’t take each team’s need in consideration regarding its prediction. So, McDermott could be drafted at a higher position. If McDermott becomes available, the Sixers would see instant dividends drafting him. He would give the Sixers another scoring option alongside scorers Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams. Young and Carter-Williams average just above 17 points per game. McDermott has been on a tear this season, leading Creighton with 26 points per game.
Other players such as Syracuse’s Jerami Grant, Duke’s Rodney Hood and UCLA’s Zach LaVine could be available, but McDermott appears to be the best choice. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound senior forward provides the Sixers with size as he would be a matchup nightmare for defenders. His 44 percent three-point shooting will force defenders to focus on guarding the perimeter.
Also, McDermott is a good rebounder. He averaged 8.2 rebounds during his sophmore year. By adding McDermott, the Sixers have another player who can protect the rim. The Sixers’ rebounding took a dip after trading Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen.
This draft is expected to be deep, so the Sixers can afford to take a chance on any player available. If the draft order goes the way NBAdraft.net predicts, the Sixers should make it a priority to select McDermott. He may be this year’s sleeper pick. He’s versatile and can move over to shooting guard in a bigger lineup.
The Sixers have a few months before finding out where they’ll be in the draft. For now, their scouts can keep his name in mind.
