The future is now for the Milwaukee Bucks as they look ahead to the 2014 NBA Draft. The team is projecting to finish dead last, resulting in at worst a top-three pick in a loaded draft. There is a good chance center Joel Embiid will be available for selection, and many want the Bucks to select him. If this happens, the Bucks should trade John Henson for the right to select guard Dante Exum later in the first round.
If the Bucks draft another center, they will have too many cooks in the frontcourt kitchen. Larry Sanders is starting a long-term contract, so Henson is the right man to move. In his second year, he has come into his own, averaging 11.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. This is great value for a team slotted to pick in the No. 8-10 range. This is where Exum is currently projected to land.
Why Exum? That’s pretty easy. The guard position is the biggest need for the Bucks, and Exum is the top prospect in this position. Brandon Knight is showing signs as a future guard and needs a running mate, one who has a great first step and can finish at the rim, Exum fits this need.
There are a lot of ifs to consider. However, if Embiid is drafted by the Bucks and Exum falls to a team that values a big man such as Henson more, this deal makes sense. The Bucks can move forward with a new frontcourt and upgraded backcourt, putting this season in the past.
