Boston Celtics: Paul Pierce Open to Returning

Paul Pierce

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

In the aftermath of a loss to the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn NetsPaul Pierce, and former Celtic, was asked about an eventual return to Boston in the future. Pierce simply replied, “Why not?” Whether this means as a player or in the front office, Pierce is leaving the door open to return to his former team in which he led for 15 years. A Pierce-Celtics reunion would be terrific for the Celtics’ fanbase and is a realistic possibility.

Paul Pierce loved the city of Boston. He was admired as a hero by the fans and it will have a special place in his heart for the rest of his life. In fact, Pierce seemed adamant to go to Brooklyn after Boston traded he and Kevin Garnett in the blockbuster deal. It was evident that he didn’t want to leave Boston, but rather stay there for the rest of his career. After a short stint in Brooklyn, he could be on his way back next season.

It would be a tremendous story if Pierce were to re-sign with Boston for the 2014-15 season. However, it should only take place under one condition: if the Celtics are a competitive team. If Danny Ainge can make a few tweaks to the roster and bring back a star player to pair up with Rajon Rondo, then a Pierce return would be ideal. It would be so much more satisfying if Pierce was to return to a reassembled, competitive team that has a real shot to win a championship.

Paul Pierce will absolutely make a return to the Boston Celtics one day. But it will most likely be as part of the front office and administration. If Ainge is able to assemble a competitive roster, then you might see Pierce coming off the bench during the 2015 playoffs. Unless that occurs, we have already seen Pierce in a Celtics uniform for the last time.
