While usual suspects Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson both had solid games, it was David Lee who was the game’s true star. Lee finished the game with 26 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
If the Warriors want to be true championship contenders this year, they need this kind of production from Lee on a regular basis. Curry and Thompson are by far and away the team’s most prolific and diverse offensive players, but Lee provides something that neither player can offer. Lee’s offensive ability in the post can keep the Warriors afloat in games where Curry and Thompson’s shots are not falling. If the Warriors’ stars cannot get into their offensive groove, Lee can pick up the offensive slack and score in bunches.
It is also encouraging that Lee had a performance like this against a solid playoff team like the Suns. Having a 26-point and nine-rebound performance against the Los Angeles Lakers is great, but it takes true talent flex your offensive muscle on a surging team like the Suns.
In addition to Lee, the Warriors’ bench played an integral role in the Dubs’ victory today. Draymond Green played great defense and pitched in 13 of the bench’s 37 points. The Warriors’ bench has averaged 39.9 points over their last seven games. If Lee and the bench can continue to provide like they did against the Suns, the Warriors have a legitimate chance of bringing an NBA championship back to the bay.
