Corey Brewer Needs to Stay In His Lane In Timberwolves’ Offense

If you’ve watched the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2013-14 NBA season, you’ve undoubtedly seen All-Star power forward Kevin Love throw some of his beautiful, patented outlet passes. More often than not, those outlet passes are finding a streaking Corey Brewer for an easy two points on the offensive end of the floor.

As many people, Timberwolves writers in particular, have noted throughout the season, Brewer has made an art-form out of leaking out. There’s a reason that the forward is averaging a mere 2.5 rebounds per game this season: he’s normally headed towards Minnesota’s basket when the rebound is grabbed. Though it can cause problems at times, it’s hard to deny that it’s an effective offensive ploy for both Brewer and the Wolves.

However, there was virtually no offense at all coming from Brewer in Minnesota’s 112-101 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. Playing 35 minutes, Brewer finished with only four points, five rebounds and three assists while hitting only one of his eight shot attempts on the night.

Though he’s been productive, Brewer has taken it upon himself as of late to try and do more offensively. Whether it’s him blowing dunks or just trying to do too much, though, the results of Brewer’s recent offensive play may have yielded results, but it hasn’t been a positive for the team overall.

Minnesota is likely going to miss the playoffs as they sit five games back of the eight-seed right now. However, it would serve them well if they could gain something clicking down the home-stretch of this season. The majority of this team will be back next season, meaning this team could benefit from finishing strong and garnering some type of momentum. However, I don’t see that happening if Brewer doesn’t settle back into a role where he can have more success.
