Dallas Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki Finally Ties John Havlicek on All-Time List
There’s no telling where Dirk Nowitzki is going to wind up on the NBA‘s all-time scoring list. He’s already passed some great players this year. Players like Jerry West, Reggie Miller and Kevin Garnett. Coming into the game against the Golden State Warriors Dirk needed 12 points to tie John Havlicek and 13 to pass him for the 12th spot on the list.
The Dallas Mavericks had a chance to move closer to the Warriors in the playoff race as well. Coming off huge wins against the Portland Trailblazers and Indiana Pacers the Mavs were riding high. Dirk passing Havlicek would be the icing on the cake if they could somehow defeat the Warriors.
Unfortunately for the Mavs and for Dirk, neither of these things happened. The Mavs were blown out by the Warriors 108-85 and Dirk scored 12 points. The 12 points did tie him with Havlicek which is a good thing. I’m sure Dirk is more concerned with the fact that his team got thrashed.
The team is a dog fight with the Warriors, Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies and the last thing on Dirk’s mind is where he winds up on the all-time scoring list. Dirk wants to make the playoffs and have a chance at another championship.
The Mavs play against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night and Dirk should move into sole possession of 12th place barring something unforeseeable happening. However, none of that will matter if they don’t win the game. Dirk will probably reflect on these accomplishments later this summer after the season is over. For now, he’s fighting to help get his team in the playoffs.
