This season has been one to forget for the Los Angeles Lakers, as Kobe Bryant has been injured, Steve Nash is on the cusp of retirement, and Pau Gasol left to operate with a cast of youngsters. The result has been that the Lakers are on the cusp of a lottery pick via 22-43 record. Thankfully they also have a lot of cap room, and they need to go after these five players to again be competitive in 2014-15.

Kyle Lowry won't turn the Lakers into a playoff team by himself, but he would be a very valuable piece considering Steve Nash may never again play in Los Angeles. Lowry is an extremely hard worker on both ends of the floor, and his season averages of 16.9 points, 7.7 assists, 1.6 steals and 36.4 minutes per game show he can be an asset for a playoff team. The gritty point guard could be had on an affordable three-year, million deal.

The Los Angeles Lakers have no big men signed past this year, and Greg Monroe could provide a key building block in this department. The 23-year-old can play both center and power forward, and in the past three seasons he has averaged at least 14.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. As a restricted free agent the Lakers would have to give up a decent haul for Monroe, but his presence could attract other star players.

3. Eric Bledsoe

Eric Bledsoe has had a breakout season statistically when on the court this season, as he has averaged 17.8 points, 6.0 assists and 4.6 rebounds in 25 games played. Unfortunately he has missed a large chunk of the season as a result of knee surgery, which may drop his demand this offseason. Bledsoe is another restricted free agent, but his immense athleticism, good shooting ability and youth should make him a good option for the Lakers.

2. LeBron James

LeBron James may have no interest in going to Los Angeles at all, but it will not hurt to go after him anyways. James is the best basketball player in the world, as his mix of athleticism, shooting ability, basketball IQ and pure will give him the ability to dominate from anywhere on the court. The Lakers have to make a run at King James, because the worst thing he can say is no.

Carmelo Anthony is one genuine superstar that should be interested in moving to Los Angeles. Anthony is a great scorer, and if he and Kobe Bryant could agree to share the ball the Lakers would have two guys who could legitimately score 27 points per game. First the Lakers will have to convince Anthony to leave New York, but the thought of playing with Bryant, a lottery pick and another mid-level star could be too much to pass up.
