After his recent hire, Phil Jackson is going to have his work cut out for him this offseason. The New York Knicks have failed to contend for a playoff position in an extremely weak Eastern Conference. However, New York is putting together a solid streak down the stretch, with the possibility of grabbing the eighth seed. Either way, there is no chance of this team contending. Therefore, Jackson must look into some free agency options this summer.

Toney Douglas is not particularly known for his offensive abilities, but rather his defensive skills. Douglas can defend either guard position pretty well, so the Knicks should definitely take a look at him. Let's not forget though, that Douglas did play in New York in the beginning stages of his career, averaging his career highs in both assists and points per game. A return may be a viable option for both sides.

His return to the Los Angeles Lakers certainly did him well this season. Jordan Farmar is playing outstanding basketball and although it hasn't translated to wins, he should have a market out there for him this offseason. The Knicks could use a point guard that can score the ball, and that is what Farmar does best. On any given night, he can go off from downtown, which would give Carmelo Anthony some much needed help.

3. Kendall Marshall

If the Knicks were smart, the team would have pursued Kendall Marshall subsequent to him being waived. However, since this is the New York Knicks, they allowed him to get away, signing with the Lakers during the season. Marshall has proven himself as a deserving player in this league, possibly even a starter. Carmelo Anthony is in desperate need of a point guard that can penetrate the defense and kick it out. Marshall may be that guy.

2. Luol Deng

In order to acquire Luol Deng, Phil Jackson must clear a massive amount of cap space. This would involve shedding themselves of Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler and Andrea Bargnani's contracts, taking back nothing in return. Of course it is a huge stretch, but if the opportunity presented itself, Deng would be a perfect fit in New York. He's an intense, defensive minded player that could ultimately convince Carmelo to stick around.

In all likelihood, Carmelo Anthony will decline his player option, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Bottom line for the Knicks is that the team must retain Anthony at all costs. He is the franchise player whether fans like it or not and he gives New York the best chance to win. If surrounded by players that fit his play style, Anthony can potentially carry the Knicks to compete again next season.
