After acquiring Dwight Howard, the Houston Rockets put themselves in the conversations of contenders in the Western Conference. Despite their fourth place standing in the West, they have not been taken very seriously as a threat for the crown. But there are few moves Houston can make to solidify their candidacy for domination.
The Houston Rockets must retain Francisco Garcia for his shooting range and his toughness on the defensive end. His gritty style of play has been known to get under the skin of his opponents, and the Rockets need more players with that mentality.
The Houston Rockets love to shoot the three-ball and so does Trevor Ariza. He is currently shooting 42.1 percent from long range and averaging 14.9 points per game. It would be a match made in heaven and the Rockets could utilize his shooting in their offense.
Patrick Beverley has been a key part of the Rockets' turnaround from a few seasons ago. He has come in and taken the starting point guard position from Jeremy Lin with his tenacity and work ethic. The Rockets will need his defensive abilities if they want to be No. 1 next season.
A team option clause sits on the Rockets' shoulders on keeping Chandler Parsons. It would be common sense to keep a guy who set an NBA record for most three-pointers made in a half. Parsons is a great offensive weapon for Houston and has continued to improve his all-around game.
Whatever Dwight Howard has been doing in practice to improve his free throw shooting is not working and needs to be revised immediately. Howard is shooting 54.8 percent from the charity stripe this season and has become a great coaching strategy as "Hack-a-Howard". If the Rockets want to go to the next level, Howard needs to improve his free throw shooting somehow.
